Toyota Dominates the Global Market: JATO Reveals Best-Selling Cars of 2022

The automotive market analysis firm, JATO, has unveiled its findings for the top-selling
cars globally in 2022, and Toyota has once again emerged as the frontrunner. According
to JATO’s data, the Toyota RAV4 claimed the top spot as the best-selling passenger car
worldwide, with an impressive 1.016 million units sold. Following closely behind was
another Toyota model, the Corolla, with 992,000 units sold.

The RAV4’s reign at the pinnacle comes as no surprise, considering its top-selling status
in 2021 as well. Securing the third position was the Tesla Model Y, which achieved a
commendable sales figure of 747,000 units.

The Honda CR-V claimed the fourth spot with 733,000 units sold, while the Toyota
Camry secured fifth place, garnering sales of 673,000 units. It is noteworthy that over
45% of the Camry’s sales originated from North America, dispelling any premature
claims of the demise of sedans.

Breaking into the top ten were models that thrived in specific markets. The Toyota Hilux
pickup held the sixth spot, despite not being available in the United States. Seventh place
went to the Nissan Sentra, representing the sole Nissan model in the ranking.

while the eighth spot was captured by the impressive newcomer, the Corolla Cross. The
Corolla Cross, which was only introduced in 2021, propelled itself to global dominance in
the compact crossover segment with an astounding 530,000 units sold.

Completing the list were two American vehicles: the Ford F-150 and the Tesla Model 3.
The F-150 boasted sales predominantly from North America, with 97% of its 525,000
units sold in the region. The Tesla Model 3 showcased a more diverse distribution, with
approximately half of its 482,000 sales taking place in North America, and significant
sales in Europe and China.

It is important to note that this list is based solely on nameplates, and thus, some
vehicles were excluded. For instance, although the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra
1500 are essentially the same truck, they were not combined in this ranking due to
General Motors’ classification as separate models. However, if combined, they would
surpass the F-150 in sales figures.

Overall, global new car sales experienced a 2% decline in 2022 compared to the previous
year. JATO, the authority on automotive analysis, predicts that global automobile prices

will decrease in 2023 as competition intensifies, particularly from China, especially in the
context of electric vehicles (EVs).
The dominance of Toyota and American manufacturers in the best-selling cars of 2022
showcases their unwavering popularity and market appeal. As the automotive landscape
evolves, the competition is set to grow fiercer, promising exciting developments and
innovations for car enthusiasts worldwide.
